MSM Spelunker Minutes of January, 16, 2008
News from the President: next week is the new memebers meeting - Be thinking about who you want as an officer next year so they can start to learn what is involved in that position.
New Business: The Shriners at Buckhorn wanted to know if we were interested in building the bonfire for the freedom ride.
Future trips:
Saturday, 10 am, parking lot by McNutt, Saltpeter cave led by Joe. Dry trip, bring a camera if you want and maybe poly plan for a six hour trip.
Past trips:
On the 29 of December Kyle, Spike and Joe went to Spring Cave into a low and nasty crawl passage, but had a nice meal of ribs, steak, beans and brownies after provided by the landowner.
On the 31 Kyle took an alumni to Finley, then to Campground cave. everyone had a good time.
On Saturday and Sunday Spike and Kyle surveyed in Shop Hollow and then surved Poker cave wtih Scott House, all 300 feet of it.
Andy spent New Years underground at Mammoth Cave, and added ten to twelve new caves to the MSS.
NEXT WEEK IS THE NEW MEMBERS MEETING WITH PIZZA AND SODA.
MEETING TIMES WILL BE AT 6:30 pm on Wednesday evenings.

Presidents Report: Went to the GSA in Denver and spoke about using modeling to predict cave locations.
The Friday night trips are going well. A group from Omaha Nebraska is interested in coming to the area and doin a bit of caving.
Old Business:

Past Trips: Amy and Spike went to Mammoth over the holiday weekend. Amy's trip was about 12 hours long with over 300 feet of survey in virgin cave. Spike's trip was about 8 hours long in the cave.
Future trips: New members trip on Sunday, September 9. Meet at Havener parking lot at 10 am.

Note for new members going on the new members trip: We will provide a helmit and primary light. you will need to bring batteries (AA for the club light). Another couple of lights to have a total of three sources of light, like flashlight. Sturdy clothes and shoes for wearing in the cave that will get muddy and will not get clean. A pack to keep a water bottle a snack, the pack will get dirty and will work better if the closures are not zippers. Once you are out of the cave you will need a trash bag to put dirty stuff into and a clean change of clothes. Gloves and knee pads are great. Gloves that look like the palm is covered with rubber are good, and knee pads can be volleyball type or a roofing type, commonly refered to as stormtroopers by cavers.

MSS rep: The MSS meeting was on Saturday. There were two presentations, one about Carroll Cave, and one of Ben Miller's caving. When you are reporting a cave location please use UTM 27 data and include a section township and range location if possible. You can now have survey field notes stored in the archive. The next meeting will be on Sunday May 20 at 10 am. Yes on Sunday this is a change.

New members trip: meet at Havener at 9:30 on Sunday January 28. We will provide a helmit and primary light. you will need to bring batteries (AA for the club light). Another couple of lights to have a total of three sources of light, like flashlight. Sturdy clothes and shoes for wearing in the cave that will get muddy and will not get clean. A pack to keep a water bottle a snack, the pack will get dirty and will work better if the closures are not zippers. Once you are out of the cave you will need a trash bag to put dirty stuff into and a clean change of clothes. Gloves and knee pads are great. Gloves that look like the palm is covered with rubber are good, and knee pads can be volleyball type or a roofing type, commonly refered to as stormtroopers by cavers.

The new members meeting of the semester.
The MSM Spelunkers is a club or grotto that goes caving. That puts it very simply. Our grotto explores caves for recreation, surveying, restoration, and study. Our grotto is a member of the National Speleological Society (NSS) and the Missouri Speleological Survey (MSS). Meetings will be Wednesday nights at 7 pm in McNutt 204.
In a usual meeting there is officer reports, new business, old business, past trips and future trips.

Vice President - Fumi - In charge of the Spelunker publication, and runs the meeting if the president is not there
Custodian - Travis - Maintains the club owned gear, equiptment and literature. He checks out gear to club memebers. New members can borrow equiptment for thier first couple trips before paying dues.

Andy and Spike went to Mammoth Cave over new years, they went to Rope Pit for about 15 hours, then Andy went to Lower Salts Cave and Spike went to Emily's Dining Room both trips were about 11 hours in.
