About AAVG
The Advanced Aero Vehicle Group was formed in 1999 as a group of students looking to apply what they learned in the classroom to real-world situations. The students were interested in pushing the envelope of their knowledge of aircraft design to new heights and so began competing in the SAE Aero Design competition in the Open Class. In 2006, some members of the team went looking for a new challenge and discovered high power rocketry. The team built its first rocket as part of an informal competition with Iowa State University, which in addition to being the team's first big rocket, was also the first to break the sound barrier. Over the years AAVG has tallied several top three finishes at competitions and continues to field both aircraft and rockets each year for collegiate competitions across the United States as well as working at outreach events aimed at increasing K-12 students' awareness of science and engineering.
