Mohamed Abdelsalam

I am a professor of geology in the Department of Geological Sciences and Engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T). My research activities focus on studying the dynamics of deformation belts (both extension and compression) with structural geology and remote sensing using the East African Rift and the East African Orogen as natural laboratories. I am also interested in applying remote sensing and GIS to understanding the geological and geomorphological evolution of the Nile. My teaching interest includes remote sensing and digital image processing, GIS, structural geology and tectonics, and geography, geology and natural resources of Africa. Recently, I became interested in using cyber-mapping in teaching undergraduate geosciences courses.

I got a BS and a MS in geology from the University of Khartoum, Sudan in 1984 and 1987, respectively. I got a Ph.D. in geosciences from the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) in 1993. I have joined Missouri S&T in the fall of 2006. Between the fall of 2000 and summer of 2006 I was an assistant professor in the Department of Geosciences at UTD. I was a research associate and scientist in the same department between the fall of 1993 and summer of 2000.

I enjoy geology because it is a curiosity-driven science, and it gives me the opportunity to travel to remote places and examine shapes and colors of nature. When I am not working, I like reading Arabic poems, painting, and playing soccer.
