Anime Glossary
-Revised by Karl
ANIME: Japanese animation. It is different from American cartoons, which are generally made for children and have little to no story progression. Anime has a much wider audience range and usually contains well constructed stories.
As a result, the majority of animes are quite short (26 episodes is considered standard) so the club can easily show a full series each semester.
MANGA: Japanese comic books. Many anime series are adapted from good manga stories.
MANGAKA: Manga writers.
ACG: Animation Comic Games. The area of study that a lot of people are into.
OAV: or, OVA. Short for "Original Animated Video" (or "Original Video Animation"), an anime miniseries released directly to video. Much shorter than a true series.
OTAKU: Although in Japan an "otaku" is considered a bad thing to be (it refers to someone who shuts himself in and does nothing but watch anime) in America the term simply refers to someone who likes anime.
FAN SERVICE: Images, such as panty shots, large breasts, etc. which serve no purpose other than to titillate the audience. The amount of fan service varies from one anime to another, from 0 to 100% of the content of the series.
HENTAI: Anime which is pornographic in nature, named after the Japanese word for "pervert". Sometimes referred to as "H" or "ecchi". Don't worry, even guys like us have too much class to put this on screen in the clubroom.
BAKA: Commonly used Japanese word in anime, meaning "stupid" or "idiot".
KAWAII: Commonly used Japanese word in anime, meaning "cute".
HAREM: A situation occasionally arising in anime wherein one character (in most cases male) is surrounded by several potential romantic interests. Harem anime tends to be cheesy, but amusing.
MAGICAL GIRL: A young girl with magical powers, generally involving transformation to a magical alter ego. The term also refers to a series centered on such characters.
MECH: Or, MECHA. An armored fighting machine with a roughly humanoid appearance, designed to give the pilot a wide range of possible movements. The term also refers to a series centered on such machines.
YAOI: Romantic or sexual relationships between male characters (also called "Shounen-Ai"). We tend not to watch this stuff in club, though it has been attempted.
YURI: Romantic or sexual relationships between female characters (also called "Shoujou-Ai"). We usually don't watch this in club either, but a few animes with yuri side-stories have made it up.
MIKO: Shrine priestess, having powers for Exorcism and fortune telling.
CAT GIRL: Female, humanoid race. Cat girls have cat ears instead of normal human ears, and sometimes have a cat's tail.
SNOW GIRL: Female, humanoid monster. Elemental like monster, appears as a female form. Can summon blizzard, snow storms and freezes stuff. Made of ice and snow, fragile during summer.
