Ceramic Engineering 369
Glass Science & Engineering
Semester: Fall 1999   Course: Cer 369   Reference number: 13540   Course Text: Modern Glass Practice, Seventh Revised Edition, S. R. Scholes, C. H. Greene (1974).   Supplemental material: Handbook of Glass Manufacturing, F. V. Tooley (1984); Fundamentals of Inorganic Glasses, A. K. Varshneya (1994); Commercial Glasses, (Advances in Ceramics, Vol. 18, 1986); various articles from the technical literature   Course meeting: M-W-F, 8:30-9:20 AM, 210 McNutt   Course Instructor: Richard K. Brow   Office/phone/e-mail: B49 McNutt/341-6812/brow@umr.edu   Office hours: 1:00-2:00 PM, Monday through Friday (other times by appointment)   Exams: Three one-hour examinations (100 points each) and a comprehensive final (200 points) will be given. Final grades will be determined from the following distributions:   Grade points
A 450-500
B 400-449
C 350-399
D 300-349
F <300
Grad Students: Term paper due 12/3/99, on glass surface (or thin films, coatings) characterization, properties, applications….   Homework: Students are encouraged to read the book chapters or articles listed in the attached course outline prior to the indicated lecture. Problem sets will be distributed on occasion. The instructor will post answers. The problem sets will not be collected or graded, but similar problems will appear on exams.   Course Objectives: Students will understand the scientific and technological descriptions of inorganic glasses (amorphous solids), review the engineering principles behind the commercial manufacture of a variety of glass products, and understand how glass surfaces control important engineering properties. Students will apply basic principles of thermodynamics and kinetics in these undertakings.   Course Content: *Definitions, concepts of glass formation, microstructure (1/3)   *Manufacturing and commercial products (1/3)   *Surface-dependent properties (1/3)
