The History of CSSA at University of Missouri - Rolla

The Chinese Student and Scholar Association enjoys a history of more than ten years. Representing students and scholars from the People's Republic of China, it's always an organization serves Chinese students, brings Chinese people in Rolla together, establishes a tie with homeland and promote colorful Chinese culture to the whole Rolla community.

Through CSSA, many activities are held to celebrate Chinese festivals and bring Chinese people in Rolla together. Among them, the Chinese New Year celebration is always the best. All Chinese people gathered together each year at this time, celebrate this special day, and remember relatives and friends back in China. Performances and games brought the celebration a lot of fun and laughter. In the meanwhile, the colorful Chinese culture is spread out in Rolla. Besides celebrating traditional Chinese festivals, many other activities have been held such as BBQ, picnic, sports activities, traveling, dancing party, welcome party, playing Chinese movies, donations for the suffering back home and in America, participating the international student activities, etc. All these activities brought Chinese students and scholars here closer to each other and to the community as a whole. More and more people are involved in CSSA's activities and affairs, and a sense of Chinese community is gradually building up among all students.

Through out these years, some special events are standing out, showing our love, care for our country and folks: several special events recorded here are:

  • 91 donation for summer big flood in China
  • 97 donation for the family of a student who died in an accident in America
  • 98 donation for summer big flood in China
CSSA has undergone a long way toward certification on campus. CSSA met many obstacles on the way to certification. Due to the confusion caused by Chinese Student Association(CSA), which is an earlier organization and is composed of Chinese students from China Taiwan, the UMR Student Affairs had refused to accept our application for certification. But as students coming from mainland China grew in numbers and more activities are held by CSSA on campus, and by consistent efforts of CSSA committee members, CSSA was certified as an authorized student group on UMR campus in Oct. 1999. this event certainly brings the CSSA to a new era. CSSA officers were elected each year to represent CSSA and serve all people. Many students have been serving CSSA during the past. It's not possible to mention everyone who served CSSA wholeheartedly here, but the names of those who served as Chairman are recorded here:
