What is a Geological Engineer?

Most high school students don’t know much about GE. We apply our engineering skills to protect and preserve the environment in which we live. We also work outdoors much of the time with emphasis on geotechnical and environmental problems. We study geological hazards such as landslides, rock falls, earthquakes, dam failures and levee failures (think New Orleans, see picture below). We are the people who are called in to study and clean up contaminated sites throughout the world. We help develop drinking water supplies here and in other parts of the world. We also study rock mechanics (rock strength and failure) which is critical to the petroleum, mining, civil, and environmental industries.
