International Student Advisory Council
Missouri University of Science and Technology
Mission:
The International Student Advisory Council was created in an effort to ensure that concerns of the Missouri S&T international student population are addressed and create an environment of positive communication. Student and Missouri S&T representatives work together to ensure that student concerns are addressed, while communicating a clear understanding of the rules and regulations under which Missouri S&T must work.
History:
In 2001 the Office of International Affairs, Missouri S&T administrators, and international student leaders worked together to create a structure on campus through which the international students would have a direct channel of communication to campus administrators. On November 7, 2001, the first meeting of the International Student Advisory Council (ISAC) was held.
Council Overview:
- The Council consists of the officers and advisors of the International Student Club; presidents and officers of the international student associations, or their representatives; members of the International Affairs office; and other campus representatives as needed.
- Meetings are usually held on the second Wednesday of each month. In case of a scheduling conflict, an alternative date is found.
- Topics addressed in the past include:
- Optional and Curricular Practical Training
- On-campus work opportunities
- Immigration regulations & legislation that impacts Missouri S&T’s international student population (SEVIS)
- Changes in the Social Security process
- International student admissions
- Transportation for new student orientation
- International Student Day
- International Education Week
- Social and cultural programs for students
- Current issues of concern to the international student population
Methods of Communication:
Students are encouraged to communicate thoughts or concerns to their club representative or International Student Club officer, so that issues can be discussed directly. Student representatives, who are members of this Council, are 1) expected to gather questions and concerns expressed by their constituency, 2) submit these topics for inclusion on the monthly agenda, 3) attempt to address issues immediately or assign action items for follow-up at the next meeting, 4) clearly communicate to the student and campus group regarding resolution of topics of concern & other issues of discussion within the Council meeting.
