Or: “The Truth of Geraniums

                                    Forget about the real thing.
                                             The painter’s war is in rendering
                                             the character of a Geranium -

                                    Produce a Profusion of Flowers
                                    Fit for a Poet’s Garden--
                                             set them out
                                             in whites &
                                             roses & reds         
                                             vermilion
                                             raw orange
                                             blue
                                             & innocent emerald
                                                        ***
                                    I sign Vincent in green scent.”

Except for the Light Incandescent
                                               the waitress at
                                               Le Zinc et Les Dames         
                                               could be transposed
                                               right out of a Vermeer
                                               as she cuts the loaf
                                               in seven sharp cuts
                                               what repose then
                                               what repose now
                                               resides only
                                               in the instant
                                               of painted perception
