Vocabulary Terms

You should be able to define the following terms.

angular shear y aspect ratio axis of rotation rigid body deformation
extension (e) heterogeneous deformation homogeneous deformation non-rigid body deformation
sense of rotation shear strain (g) Displacement Vectors (3) strain
strain ellipse (finite and instantaneous) stretch (S)  dilation distortion
Fault slip (types) Trend  Plunge

Concepts

You should be able to give short answers to the following questions:

1) For the following figures identify the deformation as either rigid-body deformation or non-rigid body deformation, and where possible, determine if translation, rotation, dilation, or distortion occurred.

Figuures 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.7, 1.10A, 1.13, 1.14B, 1.15, 1.16, 1.29, 1.34, 1.37.

2.) Calculate %e for the thick white layer in figure 1.39c and the upper black layer in figure 1.40.

3.) Assuming no change in area calculate S1, S3, e1, and e3,  for the distorted lapilli in figure 2.5.

4.) What are the requirements for and results of homogeneous deformation?

5.) Given a strain ellipse, identify (by drawing) S1, S3 and the two directions of no finite strain on the ellipse.

6.) Calculate the angular shear y for a deformed object (e.g. see figure 2.37c).

7.) A line originally 6 cm under goes extension of 0.4. What is its final length?

8.) What is the stretch of a belemenite that had an initial length of 15 cm and a final length of 12 cm?
