MS&T Parents' supports our students
and campus
The MS&T Parents and Guardians Association was formed in the 1970s to allow
parents to share more fully in their student's college experience.
The association continues to provide an added column of support
for our students.
Communication
The University encourages you to use the Parents'
Association as a vehicle for communicating with university
administration. For example, parents worked together
through the association to build the tunnel that connects
Thomas Jefferson Residence Hall with the campus. Through
this cooperative effort with the University, TJ residents
no longer have to cross the busy Highway 63.
Helping a Student in Need
The Association also sponsors programs to bvenefit your
students while they are at MS&T. One of the most important
is the Educational Assurance Program, which provides
a grant of emergency funds up to $1,000 to a student
who lost a custodial parent while s/he is enrolled at
MS&T. The Association has provided more than $50,000 in
these grants since 1981.
Fund-raising Projects
The Parents' Association has a tradition of fund-rasiing
support for MS&T as well. The Association is in its 5th
year of a $50,000 pledge to build a quiet study lounge
in the new Havener Center on campus. The lounge honors
retired MS&T Chancellor John T. Park and his wife Dorcas
for their many years of dedicated service to MS&T's students.
Former Parents' Association projects include a $25,000
gift to fund the "Green Room" in Castleman Hall and a
$100,000 fund-raising project to help renovate the University
Recreation Center.
Admission Ambassadors
To help with student recruitment, many parents become Admission
Ambassadors. Ambassadors serve as contacts for admitted
students and their parents. Ambassadors also may attend
receptions where prospective students find out more about
MS&T by meeting campus representatives, alumni and current
parents.
Lobbying on behalf of MS&T's Students
Parents who are Missouri residents may participate
in Legislative Recognition Day, when MS&T supporters go
to Jefferson City to urge legislators to support higher
education. Held in February or March, this is a great opportunity
to get to know your legislators better and inform them
of MS&T's needs.
Magazines for the Health Center
The Association provides 12 magazine subscriptions to the
Student Health Center for students to enjoy while waiting
for health care.
Parents of the Year and Graduate Teaching Assistant
of the Year Award
We provide the gift for the Parents of the Year
