EVOLUTION OF

GEOTECHNICAL PRACTICE

The history and evolution of geotechnical engineering practice has been influenced in large measure by the various geohazards and difficult foundation conditions that were encountered in southern and northern California during the 20th Century.   This project seeks to document how foundation engineering, geology, hydrology, seismology, and environmental planning  were gradually combined to handle the challenging geotechnical problems in California, which, since the March 1933 Long Beach earthquake, has employed the most stringent building codes in the United States.
