The West
Lost Trail Creek Landslide occurred on July 30, 1991 in the upper watershed
of the Rio Grande River, 4-1/2 miles below the Continental Divide in
the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. 8 million cubic meters of
rock debris slid down slope in about 25 to 30 seconds, between elevations
of 12,400 and 11,000 feet, forming a landslide dam that remains in place.
Welcome to the Natural Hazards Mitigation Institute
(NHMI) at the University of Missouri-Rolla.
The NHMI is a multi-disciplinary program of research focused on evaluation
of naturally-occuring phenomena and developing effective mitigation
techniques utilizing new technologies and materials. NHMI draws on faculty
expertise in geology, seismology,
geophysics, geological engineering,
civil and environmental engineering.
