Lecture 1: Topic Overview. One-dimensional kinematics

Objectives: The first part of this lecture is an overview over the course content and structure.
The second part of the lecture introduces kinematics. In this lecture, students will learn to
  • describe motion in terms of kinematics quantities
  • distinguish between position, distance traveled, and displacement
  • define velocity as derivative of position with respect to time
  • distinguish between speed and velocity
  • define acceleration as derivative of velocity with respect to time
  • interpret the sign of velocity and acceleration
