Information Sheet
R Phelps
County (Mo.).
13 Ledger, 1869-1923.
One folder, 73 pages, photocopies.
The author of the ledger is
unknown, but may have been Jonathan Marber. Two receipts were enclosed inside
the ledger, made out to Marber in April and July 1928. The author may have been
the owner of a mill or general store, indicated by sales of hardware and dry
goods. The first entry, dated 1869, is listed as "cost of building"
and details the cost of construction and labor.
Credits include sales of goods
as well as payments received for services rendered such as "one days
thrashing" and "harvesting." Some entries are described simply
as "a days work." Some accounts are listed by name. Some of the names
are identifiable from Phelps County, probably from Elk Prairie in the southeast
corner of the county.
The ledger also details
moves to Wellsville and Frankfort, Kansas, in the 1870s. Payments for land
purchases and the construction of a house are itemized. The author returned to
Rolla, Missouri, from Kansas in October 1881 and bought a farm. Subsequent
entries detail farm expenditures and the disposition of livestock. Entries for
the 1880s indicate that the author bought a steam tractor and began hiring out
for threshing and hauling work. Threshing accounts for 1885-1915 are included.
Ledger book by unknown
author, possibly the owner of a mill. Contains lists of credits and debits,
brief descriptions of items bought and sold, and services rendered and
received. This is a photocopy of the
original.
