R Farley, Leland J., 1904-1980.
14 Collection,
1859-1936.
One folder.
This collection includes a land grant
deed for land in Texas County, Missouri (1859), a copy of the Plat Book of Texas County (ca. 1920),
two items describing the development of the Intercounty Electric Cooperative,
and the “Historical Map of Texas County.”
This map was originally produced in 1936 as a project of the Federal
Emergency Relief Administration.
Leland Jennings Farley was born in
Houston, Missouri, in 1904. He served
as field investigator with the Federal Emergency Relief Administration in
1935-1936, and did the surveys for the “Tourist Map of Texas County,
Missouri.” In 1946, Farley joined the
staff of the Intercounty Electric Cooperative in Licking, Missouri, where he
served with the Power Use Department until his retirement in 1970.
The “Tourist Map of Texas County” was
published as a project of the Federal Emergency Relief Administration in
1936. Engineers from the Missouri
School of Mines and Metallurgy, now the University of Missouri-Rolla supervised
it. The map was reprinted in 1969 under
the title “Historical Map of Texas County.”
The original map was printed by subscription, and carried advertisements
by local businessmen. Photocopies of
these ads are included in the folder with the reprinted maps. The 24 August 1978 edition of the Houston Herald carried a story on Farley
and the map, which is called “... still the only source of information
regarding the location of old school houses, churches, vanished springs, caves,
and Indian village sites in Texas County.”
The collection also includes a land grant
deed awarded for service in the Seminole War (1859), a Plat Book of Texas County, Missouri (ca. 1920), and two items providing
a brief sketch of the development of rural electrification in the Texas County
area.
