These are daybook-ledgers from the Ste. Genevieve English and Classical Academy, a private school established by Firmin A. Rozier in 1853.  The ledgers include a list of expenses incurred by the school, and accounts of tuition and school supplies charged to the students.

                      Vol. 1:  1853-1861

                      Vol. 2:  1856-1861

Ray Thomas, Superintendent of the Ste. Genevieve Public Schools, loaned the Ste. Genevieve Academy ledgers for microfilming.  The originals were returned to the Ste. Genevieve School Board.

The Ste. Genevieve English and Classical Academy was opened in 1854 by Firmin A. Rozier.  The building had been in an unfinished state since 1808, when the territorial government chartered the academy as the first school in the Missouri Territory.  Rozier operated the academy until war forced its closing in 1862.  The academy never re-opened, and Rozier used the building as his residence.

Rozier bought the building in 1853, and the first entry in Volume One records the expenditures for the purchase of the “Old Ste. Genevieve Academy” and “diverse lots.”  Subsequent entries detail the cost of refurbishing the building and buying school supplies.  The remainder of the volume contains itemized accounts for purchases made by students.  Filmed with this volume are eleven newspaper clippings and broadsides which had been glued to the inside pages.  The clippings deal with the opening of the school in 1854 and the negotiations between Rozier and the school board concerning the land on which the academy was located.  The broadsides announced the school sessions, public examination of the students, and the election of the board of trustees of the Academy.

Volume Two is another individual account ledger-daybook that has been pieced together from separate ledgers with different pagination.  There is an index in the front of the volume.  The ledger contained five enclosures, and they have been filmed with it.
