This is a record of assessments on personal property in Belleview and Union townships in Washington County, Missouri.  Real estate, slaves, cash, and miscellaneous property are listed.  An index is available.

This assessment book begins with a two-page statement of “Object of Taxation, 1854,” which is a copy of revenue laws enacted by the Washington County Court during the session of 1848-1849.  All males between the ages of 21 and 55 were designated as liable for taxation on a wide range of personal possessions.  Those enumerated in the volume are slaves, mills, miscellaneous property, cash and notes, and land holdings.  Slaves and acreage have values included.  Legal descriptions of land and its original claimants are also noted.  Columns for total taxation and the state tax due are unfilled.  The volume lists individuals in Union Township, northeast of the county seat at Potosi, and Belleview Township in the extreme southeastern corner of Washington County.

The Mine au Breton Historical Society holds this volume at its museum in Potosi.  It was microfilmed by the Missouri State Archives in 1985, and a copy of the microfilm was donated to the Western Historical Manuscript Collection-Rolla by the historical society.
