R Benton County Medical
Society (Mo.).
278 Record book, 1915-1954.
One folder,
photocopies.
This volume includes a roster of members,
financial records, and minutes of meetings of the Benton County Medical
Society, organized in 1897. Included are
several applications for membership.
The charter members of the Benton County
Medical Society were ten physicians from Cole Camp, Lincoln,
Palo Pinto, Fairfield, and Warsaw.
Little is known of the early proceedings of the Society, as all records
were destroyed by fire at the office of the secretary, Dr. J. R. Smith, in Warsaw in 1915. This volume, held now by the Benton County
Museum, includes a note
by Dr. Smith explaining the loss. The
post-1915 records contain membership accounts and minutes of meetings to
1954. Meetings were held irregularly,
averaging two per year, and usually included a lecture or paper on a medical
topic. Examinations of patients were
sometimes conducted. There are no minutes
for 1918 or for 1938-1953. The last
meeting recorded was held on 18 March 1954.
