These are ledgers, journals, and daybooks from mercantile establishments located in or near Mount Vernon in Lawrence County, Missouri.  Included are records attributed to stores operated by “B. & O. Stone,” “Whaley & George,” Samuel Stone, “Haley & McCanse,” “Gay, Allen & Co.,” Nancy Stone, and “Kellogg & Whaley.”

The earliest volume in this series (Volume 1) has been attributed to “B. & O. Stone,” and the two succeeding daybooks (Volumes 2 and 3) may also be from that establishment.  The "B" of “B. & O. Stone” was Benjamin Stone.  "O" has not been identified, but by 1864 "O" had removed to Texas, leaving Benjamin and his wife, the former Nancy Owsley, as proprietors.

Volume 4, although unattributed, is interesting for its inclusion of “mineral” (lead) as payment on accounts.  Likewise, Volume 6, very tentatively attributed to Samuel Stone, includes accounts for “Bill of Goods Sent to Mines,” and “Amount [of] Lead Sent Off.”

The proprietors of “Haley & McCanse” (Volume 7) were Maj. Harrison Haley and William Alexander McCanse (1821‑1911).  The store was located on the south side of the courthouse square in Mount Vernon.  McCanse was twice the treasurer (1848‑1852, 1854‑1856) of Lawrence County.

Little is known about Volume 5, attributed to “Whaley & George,” except that Thomas Whaley had preceded Harrison Haley as a partner of W. A. McCanse in 1855.  Likewise, there is no further information for Volume 10, attributed to “Gay, Allen & Co.”  Volumes 8 and 9 are unidentified.

Volumes 11 through 22 are from the store of Nancy (Owsley) Stone, who continued in business after being widowed about 1865.  She entered into a partnership with William W. Whaley, but on 1 January 1868 she married James Madison Kellogg (1810‑1884), who operated a store on the southwestern corner of the square.  No doubt due to the marriage, “Nancy Stone”/”Stone & Whaley” was restyled as “Kellogg & Whaley” after an inventory of Nancy Stone’s merchandise on 15 September 1869 (see Volumes 11 and 22).  The final volume (23) is a journal for the new firm of “Kellogg & Whaley,” representing a major consolidation of the mercantile interests in Mount Vernon at that time.  This firm’s records are continued in collection R332.

These records reflect the typical business of general stores in small towns during this period.  The original volumes are held by the Lawrence County Historical Society at its museum in the Jones Memorial Chapel near Mount Vernon, Missouri.
