This is a Civil War memoranda book of Thomas J. Dalton, a resident of Mississippi County, Missouri, and non‑commissioned officer of Co. E, 8th Missouri Cavalry (CSA).  The miscellaneous entries include a roster of Co. E, notes on arms and accouterments issued to the company and matters of personal finance.  An indexed typescript is available.

Thomas J. Dalton of Charleston, Missouri, enlisted as a corporal in the 8th Missouri Cavalry (CSA), on 20 September 1862 in Mississippi County.  He had had prior service in Gen. M. Jeff Thompson’s 1st Division, Missouri State Guard.  Dalton’s Co. E was attached to the battalion of Missouri Cavalry under Col. William E. Jeffers through December 1862, when the battalion was re‑organized as the 8th Missouri Cavalry.  Dalton was promoted to sergeant of Co. E on 24 December 1862.  He is listed on all the regimental records that exist for Co. E through the end of the war.  He was surrendered at Shreveport, Louisiana, on 26 May 1865, and was paroled on 7 June 1865.

Dalton’s record book consists of miscellaneous combinations of personal memoranda and records pertaining to Co. E.  There are many undated entries concerning personal finance which may belong to the postwar period.  There is a single entry dated 14 January 1863 at Dardanelle, Arkansas, but most of the entries concerning military service are dated 1864 and 1865.

The original memoranda book was held by the late Brig. Gen. O. T. Dalton, Jr.  The volume was loaned for copying to the Mississippi County Historical Society in 1985.  Members of the society prepared a typescript and an index of the memoranda book.
