These are daybooks (1870, 1872-1879),
journals (1872-1879), and ledgers of a general merchandise establishment owned
by James Madison Kellogg and William W. Whaley.
The store was located on the courthouse square in
James Madison Kellogg (1810‑1884)
and William W. Whaley were the apparent proprietors of Kellogg & Whaley. The store was located on the courthouse

The earliest daybook (Volume 1) and the
first two ledgers (Volumes 13‑14) are keyed to a journal volume filmed
earlier as Volume 23 of collection R315.
Beginning on 18 November 1872, the daybooks are continuous through 31
December 1879. The journals are complete
from 15 June 1872 through 15 March 1879.
The ledgers provide convenient name indexes to the store’s patrons.
The volumes as a whole reflect a typical
general merchandise business in a small county seat during the 1870s.
