R         Sainte Genevieve Tan Yard.

335                  Account book, 1823‑1829.

                                    One folder.

This is a ledger and daybook (combined in one volume) of a tannery located in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri.  Accounts note hides and skins exchanged for leather and general merchandise credits.  Also included are a poem and an “inventory of all the persenel estate of James Buckely deceased.”

The front part of the volume is a daybook, with inclusive dates of 1 September 1823 through 12 February 1829.  Both credits and debits are listed as they were incurred.  In general, patrons brought in hides and skins, and in return they received leather, miscellaneous goods such as tobacco, and/or credit for general merchandise purchases, often “at value’s.”

The rear portion of the volume is a ledger based upon the daybook entries.  Personal accounts included are for Peter Bequet, Joseph Bogy, Jean Baptiste Janis, Peter Kimmel, Lewis F. Linn, Auguste and Vital Ste. Gemme, and many other residents of the area.  There is an index to the accounts at the end of the volume.  Many of the accounts appear to have been settled by the close of the period covered in the volume.

There is a three‑verse poem, author unknown, on one of the pages between the daybook and the ledger.  On a separate sheet of paper is an “inventory of all the persenel estate of James Buckely, deceased.”
