R         Ste. Genevieve Telephone Company.

339                  Papers, 1899‑1906.

                                    Eight folders.

These are bills for various goods and services rendered to the Ste. Genevieve Telephone Company.  John Tlapek and Henry L. Rozier organized the company, which later became part of the Bell system.

The papers of the Ste. Genevieve Telephone Company were found pasted in an account ledger in the banking and mercantile records of the Rozier family.  The papers were removed from the ledger for separate cataloging.  The items are arranged chronologically.  An index to the collection is available.

The telephone company papers consist almost entirely of bills submitted to the firm.  The bills evidence the construction of new lines as well as maintenance and repair of existing lines. The company appears to have purchased most of its wire, insulators, and transmission equipment from the American Electric Telephone Company of Chicago and the Ewing‑Merkle Electric and Western Electric companies of St. Louis.  Poles, common hardware, hand tools, miscellaneous supplies, and lodging for linemen were obtained in the local area.  Long distance services were provided by Bell companies at St. Louis and Cape Girardeau.  Monthly summaries of toll service from Ste. Genevieve are included in the papers.
