This volume contains accounts for lead,
copper, and “copper stone” shipped at Ste. Genevieve, Missouri,
1828‑1848, mostly by the firm of Menard & Valle, and a letter of 1867
from H. Janis of Ste. Genevieve to John Hall of Madison County, Missouri,
concerning land on the St. Francis River.
The mineral accounts deal with
transactions in lead, copper, and “copper stone” via the transshipment center
of Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, on the Mississippi River.
Firms involved included: Henry Janis & Company; Menard & Valle;
Menard, Valle and Company; Francois Deguire & Company; DeGuire, Janis &
Deguire; Michel Deguire & Company; Slater & Janis; Hill, Janis &
Hill; La Motte Copper Company; Slater & Deguire; G. W. Lanpher &
Company; John Hill & Janis; Hagen, Janis & Hill; Janis & Valle;
Mathews & Janis; and Thomas Fleming & Sons. The Shelf List indicates the organization of
the volume and the dates involved for each firm. A “Recapitulation of Lead Made” at the close
of the mineral accounts showed a total of over 5,750,000 pounds produced in
the period 1832‑1848.
Also included in the volume is a
transcription of a letter, dated 11 February 1867, from H. Janis of Ste.
Genevieve to John Hall of Madison
County. The letter deals with land owned by Janis on
the St. Francis River.
