This collection consists of
correspondence, biographical material, and miscellaneous material regarding
James Lindsay of Ironton, Missouri, and his sons, Joseph F. Lindsay
and Robert L. Lindsay. The Lindsays
were prominent early residents of Iron
County and were Union
veterans of the Civil War.
James Lindsay (1814‑18978) was a
native of Orange County, Virginia.
He brought his family to Madison County, Missouri, during the
1840s. He was a state representative and
senator in the 1850s. He also engaged in
the publishing business, founding newspapers at Fredericktown and Ironton. He was a staunch Union man and was colonel of
the 63rd Enrolled Missouri Militia, 1862‑1864. He was commissioned colonel of the Iron, Madison, and Wayne counties regiment
of Missouri
militia in 1865.
Robert L. Lindsay and Joseph Fremont
Lindsay, also served in the Union army during the war. Robert was captain of Co.
F. of the 50th Missouri Infantry. Joseph
F. Lindsay, his youngest brother, also served in the same company. They saw action at the Battle of Pilot Knob
in 1864.
The materials in the Lindsay collection
were assembled by Kathryn Ray Henry of St.
Louis, a granddaughter of Joseph Fremont Lindsay. Much of the material concerns the Civil War
in southeastern Missouri,
and the military service of the Lindsays.
There is also biographical material for James and Joseph F.
Lindsay. In 1873, Joseph married Abby
Russell, the daughter of Theodore Russell and Emily Guild of Russellville, near
Ironton.
