These are records of the processing of lead and zinc ores from mines in and around Jasper County, Missouri.   The volume also includes records of sales of processed ores to refining companies, and the sales and purchases of sand.  The names and locations of various mines and operators are noted, as are the prices for various grades of ore.

The Joplin Separating Company milled ores produced from Jasper County mines around Joplin.  Processing included removing dirt and waste rock from mineral‑bearing ore, and roasting the product to drive off moisture and other impurities.  Zinc ores constituted the largest portion of the business, although some lead ores were also handled.  The company appears to have been purchasing ores directly from the miners working the various deposits in the area.

Five categories of records were kept in the record book, the largest and most detailed of which recorded the processing of zinc ores.  The chronological entries begin on 31 October 1902 and continue through 30 January 1909.  The records for each batch of ore include the name of the mining company which produced the ore and the location and district from which it came, the gross and net weights of ore, and notations on the amounts of zinc, iron and moisture in the ore.

The record book also contains entries for zinc ores sold, 1902-1908, with notes on the origin and composition of the ores.  The entries for lead sales, 1902‑1907, indicate that most of the separating company’s lead ores were purchased by the Picher Lead Company for refining. There are a few entries for the sales of sand in 1902, and “sludge and jig sand purchases,” 1902‑1903.
