This is a daily record of water levels on the Mississippi River at New Madrid, Missouri, 22 November 1892 ‑‑ 31 August 1900.  There are also occasional notes on the weather, river conditions, and steamboats.

Fritz Smith recorded the water levels of the Mississippi River at New Madrid twice daily, at 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.  His sisters, Josie and Ruth Smith, continued the record after his death.  Notations in the log concerning inspections of the river gauge and maintenance of a bulletin board on the river bank indicate that the record keeping was supervised by the federal government.  Most entries consist only of river levels, but occasionally include notations on accumulations of ice on the river, steamboats which visited New Madrid, and events in the town.  Beginning in 1898, most entries include brief weather reports.
