Information Sheet
R Sainte
Genevieve (Mo.).
386 Tax
book, 1861.
One
volume.
This is a record of taxes on real estate
and personal property in the city of Ste. Genevieve, Missouri. The records include an alphabetical listing
of property owners, the location and value of real estate, taxes on slaves,
notes, bonds, dogs, and other personal property, and the amount of tax assessed.
Despite its short length, the tax book
contains a substantial amount of information on the relative wealth of the
citizens of Ste. Genevieve. It should be
noted, however, that the volume includes assessments only on property within
the limits of the town, and thus may not represent the total net worth of each
taxpayer. Real estate holdings comprise
the single largest taxable category, followed by notes and bonds, slaves, and
miscellaneous personal property. There
are running totals for each category, and combined totals are entered on the
last page of the volume. A total of
$1655.58 was levied, including $402.40 assessed on the value of 108
slaves. Some of the town’s leading
citizens are represented in the 258 individuals assessed, as well as some of
its less distinguished residents. The
wealthiest included Felix Amoreaux, Auguste Bequette, Charles Bisch, Pelage
Berthold, Felix Janis (estate), Mathew Kern, Herman Lelie, Anthony LaGrave,
Louis Menard, Adolph Papin (estate), Felix and Ferdinand Rozier, Felix Valle,
and Sebastian Ziegler. Four “Negro” and
one “Meulatto” taxpayers are also included on the list of taxpayers.
