One volume.
MICROFILM
This is a record of assessments on real
estate and personal property in Morgan County, Missouri. The volume includes a listing of taxpayers,
the amount of taxable property, including slaves, and the amounts
assessed. There are separate lists of
assessments of property in the towns of Versailles,
Florence, and
Mining Post.
The assessment book contains a
substantial amount of information on the relative wealth of the citizens of Morgan County. Most of the taxpayers listed are men, but a
few women were also assessed. The tax
book is the work of George W. Martin, the county assessor in 1844. His records itemize the assessments on
several different categories of personal property held by 1,056 resident and
non‑resident owners. Real estate
was the most common taxable property, and the records note the legal
description and original claimant of each parcel. Other classes of personal property on which taxes
were levied include slaves, horses, cattle, carriages, watches, clocks, bonds,
notes, and “money at interest.” Four
hundred eighty‑seven slaves were assessed in 1844, with a total value
only slightly less than the 90,000 acres of land evaluated. Aggregate values of the entire county are
presented in tabular form following the records of assessment for individuals. The table includes the total valuation of
real estate in Versailles, Florence, and Mining Post. Lists of individual owners of real estate in
these towns are entered separately at the end of the volume.
