These are clerk’s record books of the Marvin School
southeast of Versailles
in Morgan County, Missouri. The records
include minutes of meetings, annual enumeration of children and taxpayers,
financial records, and statements of the district clerk.
School District No. 47 included parts of
thirteen sections in Township 42 North, Range 17 West. The district was designated No. 2 (1904‑1906),
and No. 18 (1906‑1909) before reorganization of school districts in
1909. The school itself was located in
the center of the district, near the village
of Marvin.
The records of the district consist of
three standard volumes of the type published for use by school district clerks
in Missouri. Each volume contains several types of
records. The minutes of annual meetings
of the district contain the results of elections for officers, decisions on the
duration of the school term, and approvals of actions of the Board of
Directors. The minutes of meetings of
the directors generally concern the hiring of teachers and the maintenance of
school property. Each record book
includes financial records for the district, including expenditures for salaries
and school supplies, receipts of funds from the county, and estimates of needs
for the following term. The estimates
were based in part on the annual enumeration of school‑age children and
taxpayers in the district, which classified children by age and sex, and listed
their parents or guardians. About
twenty‑five children, all of whom were white, were enumerated each year
in the district. Statements of the
district clerks, lists of teachers, teachers’ contracts, and the oaths of
directors are recorded in each volume.
