This is a journal, 1905-1930, of a native of Denmark and resident of Chicago, Illinois.  The entries include notes of becoming a naturalized citizen and a description of a trip to California.  With the journal are two letters to John Nielsen at Licking, Missouri, from relatives in Denmark, 1969.  The letters and part of the journal are in Danish.

Jorgen Vilhelm Nielsen was a resident of Chicago, Illinois.  His journal, 1905‑1930, contains miscellaneous memoranda and diary entries, some of which are in Danish.  They include undated entries on American history and English grammar which may have been connected with the process of becoming a naturalized citizen, and descriptions of property and locations in Chicago, one of which was the Field Museum.  Entries for 1907 indicate that Nielsen was employed by the Swedish‑American Telephone Company before taking a position as a private chauffeur.  There are no entries for 1908‑1916.  In 1918, Nielsen journeyed by rail to Los Angeles via Denver and Salt Lake City.  The trip is described in the journal as well as in more detailed entries on separate pages enclosed within the volume.  Miscellaneous entries to 1930 conclude the journal.

With the journal are two letters written in 1969 to John Nielsen in Licking, Missouri, by a brother and sister in Denmark.  Both letters are in Danish.

The Nielsen papers were in the estate file of Catherine Nielson[sic] of Texas County, Missouri.  She died without heirs, and the papers remained in the files of William Hiett, attorney for the estate.  John C. Tindel, successor to Hiett, donated the papers to WHMC‑Rolla.
