R Dexter Monday Club (

These are scrapbooks and “Press” books of
the Dexter Monday Club, a women’s club at Dexter in
The Dexter Monday Club was organized in
1922 and in the same year entered the Missouri Federation of Women’s Clubs and
the General Federation of Women’s Clubs.
Mrs. W. C. Dieckman was the first president. There were thirty‑six members in
1922. By the 1960s, the membership had
risen to fifty. Although it was
primarily a social organization, the Monday Club also undertook civic and
charitable projects. These included
sponsorship of a Girl Scout troop, college scholarships for high school
seniors, and donations to the Stoddard County Home, Missouri Veterans
Hospital, American Red Cross, the Boy Scouts,
The scrapbooks and “Press” books were
annual projects of the club. A committee
of two club members was appointed each year to assemble the materials. The scrapbooks were submitted for judging at
district and state conventions, and scoresheets and awards are present in many
of the volumes. Each scrapbook includes
the club’s printed yearbooks, newspaper clippings, lists of officers and past
presidents, memorials to deceased members, miscellaneous materials pertaining
to the club’s projects, and various printed materials from the state and
national federations. The earliest
scrapbooks in the collection, for 1941‑1942 and 1944‑1945, include
photographs of
Seven of the volumes in the collection
are “Press” books, which are companion volumes to the scrapbooks for those
years. The press books contain program
notes for the year’s meetings and newspaper clippings concerning the Monday
Club’s meetings and events. The press
book for 1966‑1967 also includes club yearbooks for 1922‑1923 and
1931‑1932.
The volumes have been arranged in
chronological order. Most of the
scrapbooks have tables of contents but the volumes are not indexed.
