This volume contains lists of real estate owned by Francis C. Rozier of Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, in Missouri, Iowa, and Texas, and “assessments” of the real, personal, and intangible property of Rozier’s, his estate’s, and his widow’s.

Francis Claude Rozier, son of Jean Ferdinand Rozier and Constance Roy, was born in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, on 1 February 1816.  On 22 October 1839 he married Marie Zoe Valle (1821‑1900), daughter of Jean Baptiste Valle, Jr., and Marie Louise Janis.  They had twelve children, only four of whom survived to full adulthood.  A successful businessman and civic leader, F. C. Rozier died in Ste. Genevieve on 8 May 1879.

This volume had two major purposes.  The first, as reflected in its cover label, was to list the “Real estate belonging to Francis Rozier of Ste. Genevieve Missouri.”  The second was to list and summarize the “assessments” of property, including “tangible” and “intangible,” as well as real estate, of F. C. Rozier’s and, after his death, of his estate’s and his widow’s.

Related or contiguous parcels of real estate were listed together, one group to a page.  Described were the size, location, date of acquisition, the name of the seller, improvements, and the purchase price of each parcel.  Subsequent dispositions of the properties were noted as late as 1919.  Most of F. C. Rozier’s lands were located in the city and county of Ste. Genevieve, but he also owned property in the city of St. Louis, Iron, Jefferson, Perry, Washington, and Wayne counties in Missouri, Liberty County in Texas, and Ringgold and Taylor counties in Iowa.  Many pages have been removed from this part of the volume, suggesting that the list is not complete.

The assessment lists began in 1876 and continued annually from 1879 through 1898, with penciled annotations for 1901.  Included were livestock, money on deposit, watches, sewing machines, pianos, and other items.  On 12 December 1876 F. C. Rozier’s property was assessed at $51,240.  The assessment for his estate in 1881 was $10,400, while that for his widow was $49,290.  By 1893 her personal property was worth $53,765, and her real estate was valued at $12,575.
