R Junior Civic Club (

These are minute books and scrapbooks of
the Junior Civic Club, a women’s club formed in 1949 at Dexter in
The Dexter Civic and Study Club held a
special meeting on 12 April 1949 to form a club for younger women in the
community. The meeting resulted in the
formation of the Junior Civic Club. The
organization was patterned after the Dexter Civic and Study Club, and its
stated purpose was to promote the civil and cultural welfare of the Dexter
community. Membership was limited to
twenty‑one women. The Junior Civic
Club affiliated with the state and national federations of women's clubs in
1949.
From its beginning, the club supported
Girl Scout and Brownie troops in Dexter.
Other projects over the years included support of needy families and
underprivileged children, purchase of playground equipment for city parks and
schools, participation in city beautification projects and community festivals,
the funding of scholarships, and support of local charities such as the Red
Cross. Much of the work was carried out
in cooperation with other civic organizations in Dexter and
The records of the club consist of eight
minute books and eight scrapbooks. The
minute books contain records of meetings beginning with the organizational
meeting on 12 April 1949 and continuing through 5 May 1977. The scrapbooks begin in 1968 and continue
through 1978. They contain photographs, newspaper clippings and other items
pertaining to the club's activities, and printed materials from the state and
local federations. Each scrapbook also
includes a yearbook with the club’s constitution and by‑laws, lists of
officers and members, and a summary of the year’s projects.
