R Mark Twain National Forest (Mo.).
471 Local history collection,
1930s-1980s.
One hundred
nine files.
MICROFILM
This collection was selected from
unofficial files on miscellaneous historical topics, including local
histories, the CCC, the YCC, the “Irish Wilderness,” and the Eleven Point River.
There are transcriptions of interviews with “old-timers” and Forest
Service retirees.
Land acquisition for what is now the Mark Twain National Forest began in 1933. Eventually two National Forests were
established in Missouri.
They were the Clark
National
Forest
and the Mark Twain National Forest, which later combined under the single
administration of the Mark
Twain National Forest, with headquarters in Rolla. Most of the Forest’s area is located south of the Missouri River in the Ozarks region.
This collection was selected from a
larger group of unofficial files on miscellaneous subjects which has been
accumulated by the Forest over many years. These specific files were selected for their
historical research value. Included are
local histories, and material concerning the Civilian Conservation Corps, Youth
Conservation Corps, the “Irish Wilderness,” the Eleven Point National Scenic River, watermills, Forest Service activities,
and other topics. There are also transcribed
reminiscences of “old timers” and Forest Service retirees, and several versions
of histories of the Forest itself.
