This collection contains papers of the Audibert and Tickell families of New Madrid, Missouri.  Included are miscellaneous papers, 1816-1932, the store ledger of Aime Audibert, 1850-1860, and shipping receipts of M. J. Tickell and Son, 1872-1880.

Aime Audibert was a native of France who came to the United States with his family as a child.  The family settled first in New Albany, Indiana, then moved to New Madrid, Missouri.  Audibert went into the general merchandise business, and had a store at New Madrid by at least 1850.  In 1868, he bought out the stock of another store run by Aime A. Roy at New Madrid.

Madison Jackson Tickell (1826‑1903) was born in White County, Tennessee.  The family later moved to Hickman, Kentucky.  Tickell came to New Madrid in 1847, and in the same year he married Louisa Audibert.  Tickell worked first as a carpenter and house mover, and then was a farmer and stock raiser.  His stock and farm produce were shipped to New Orleans and St. Louis.

The collection consists of three folders.  Folder 1 includes miscellaneous papers and correspondence, a document (in French) concerning the Audibert family in 1816, the inventory and bill of sale for the merchandise purchased from Aime A. Roy, and letters concerning the marriage of Louis Alfred Tickell and Leila Summers in 1877.  Folder 2 contains an account ledger for Aime Audibert’s store, 1850‑1860, which indicates charges to and settlements of individual accounts.  Many of the payments on account were in kind, primarily in the pelts of raccoon, mink, and muskrat.  Folder 3 contains shipping receipts of M. J. Tickell and Son for corn and cotton shipped by steamboat from New Madrid to Woods, Matthews & Company of New Orleans.  The receipts indicate that M. J. Tickell and Company were shipping and forwarding agents for a number of producers in New Madrid County.
