31 “The
Missouri Indian Trails,” n.d.
25 pages, typescript.
This is a photocopy of a paper, which
describes Indian trails and the earliest roads in Missouri, with an emphasis
on the southeastern portion of the state.
John P. Skaggs, president of the Madison
County Historical Society, loaned “The Missouri Indian Trails” for copying to
the Western Historical Manuscript Collection-Rolla. The paper was in the collection of the late Dr. W. Harry Barron
of Fredericktown, Missouri.
The date of the typescript is
unknown. The paper is based upon
secondary sources and on field investigations by the author. Cyrus T. McCormick began work as a
professional surveyor in 1878. He was
county surveyor of Madison County and an engineer for the Missouri Highway Department
from 1913 to 1923. During this period
McCormick traveled extensively throughout southeastern Missouri. He made observations and gathered data from
residents of the area which “... was handed down to them by their forefathers
along a traditional line as to the location of the old Indian trails ...
through this part of the country.”
