These are records of the school at Akers
on the Current River in Shannon County, Missouri. The collection includes teachers’ registers,
1910-1945, and the records of the district clerk, 1922-1953.
The community at Akers grew up along the Current River
at the crossing of the Salem
road. A dozen to fifteen extended
families lived in the area by the 1850s.
Following the Civil War, Akers grew to include a post office, a general
store, a grist mill, and a one-room log school.
During the 1920s an automobile ferry began operating at Akers. This ferry, one of the last of its kind in
the state, was still in operation in the 1990s.
In 1970 the town site and much of the community became part of the
Ozark National Scenic Riverways, operated by the U.S. National Park
Service. The Park Service has since
developed a major campground and recreational site at Akers.
The first school at Akers was a log
building. It was replaced in 1898 by a
new structure when the Cedar Hill School District No. 1 was created. However, the school has always been known as
“Akers School.”
The records of Akers School
consist of volumes maintained by its various teachers and district
clerks. The teachers’ records include
records of attendance, classification, and standing, reports to district and
county officials, and lists of visitors to the school. Especially interesting are comments left for
succeeding teachers, which include observations on various students and on
other matters of concern. The records of
the district clerks include minutes of annual, special, and directors’
meetings, annual enumeration of children, records of warrants issued, and
reports to the county superintendent.
