493 Collection, 1938-1974.
Two folders.
This collection includes minutes of the Business Women’s Circle (1938-1944), a capital campaign booklet (1954), a “Centennial Record” (1970), directories (1960, 1970), other printed material, and items concerning member Sadie Goggin (1884-1965), including three Sunday School class records (1952-1955), and an obituary.
The First Baptist Church of Rolla, Missouri, was organized in 1870. An affiliate of the Southern Baptist Convention, it was the largest Baptist congregation in the area. These materials apparently were collected by Sadie Goggin, an active member for many years. They were acquired at an estate auction, but not that of Miss Goggin’s.
The Business Women’s Circle met regularly throughout the period of the minutes included in the volume (January 1938 through November 1944). A typical meeting included dinner, devotionals, songs, a business session, and a program, usually a report and discussion on a topic of interest. During the summer months the meetings were frequently held outdoors at a local park or swimming pool. The minutes list the activities, but generally provide few details. Sadie Goggin was an active member of the Circle, and more often than not held an office, including the presidency.
Printed materials in Folder 1 include two copies of a leaflet published in 1951 to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the ordination of pastor J. V. Carlisle; a booklet (1954) supporting a capital campaign to raise $140,000; a “yearbook” for 1960 including a directory of organizations, names of officers, a schedule of meetings and events, a membership roll, and the constitution and bylaws; a twenty-eight page “Centennial Record” published in 1970 including many historical photographs and historical data; a “Pictorial Directory” of members published in 1970; and three undated clippings.
Folder 2
