R Grand Army of the Republic. Tom Walker Post No. 379 (Zion, Mo.).
494 Minute book, 1888-1895.
One folder,
photocopies.
These are the minutes of meetings of the
Tom Walker Post of the G.A.R. at Zion,
Stoddard County, Missouri. The minutes
begin with the organizational meeting on 7 April 1888 and continue through 16
February 1895.
Henry A. Alstholz of Cape
Girardeau organized the Tom Walker Post at Leora, Missouri,
on 7 April 1888. Although it is not
explained in the minutes, the post may have been named for Thomas J. Walker, a
judge of the county court during the 1850s.
The first of its regular monthly meetings was held at the Methodist
Episcopal Church at Zion,
as were all subsequent meetings of the post in the period covered by this
minute book. In 1893, the post
investigated, but did not pursue, purchase of land for its own hall. From 1888 to 1895, post commanders were J. H.
Crews, D. K. Taylor, and Cecil Reynolds.
Activities included the decoration of cemeteries on Memorial Day, and
annual picnics and patriotic programs on Independence Day. On 6 January 1894, a committee was appointed
to determine if any fraudulent pensioners existed in the neighborhood, but
none were reported.
