R Cayce, Milton Pleasant, 1804-1888.
498 Papers, 1833-1926.
Four
folders.
These are personal and business papers of
Milton P. Cayce and family of Farmington, St. Francois County, Missouri. Included are bills of lading for goods shipped
through Ste. Genevieve (1849), family correspondence and business papers
(1833-1926), and papers and correspondence with Firmin A. Rozier regarding
the St. Francois and Iron Mountain Road
Company (1877-1883).
The Cayce family is one of the most
prominent lines in the early history of St.
Francois County, Missouri. Pleasant Cayce (1767-1840) brought his family
to Missouri from Virginia
in 1830, locating first in St.
Charles County. His son, Milton Pleasant Cayce (1804-1888)
was a native of Charlotte
County. He came to Farmington, Missouri,
in 1832, where he established a general store.
His family followed him to St.
Francois County
in 1834. Milton Cayce was active in
business throughout his life. In
addition to his store, he was a partner in building five miles of gravel road
near Farmington, operated a blacksmith shop,
tanyard, and flouring mill, and was treasurer of the St.
Francois and Iron Mountain Plank Road Company. He was also county sheriff, 1838-1840,
county treasurer, 1838-1858, and postmaster of Farmington.
Shortly before his death in 1888, the agent for the Goodspeed Publishing
Company described him as one of the most prominent of the oldest and most
enterprising citizens of Farmington.
Folder 1 contains copies of bills of lading
for goods shipped by S. & J. Ziegler and M. P. Cayce in 1849. Folder 2 consists primarily of business
papers, along with a few pieces of family correspondence from family members
in Virginia and California.
Folder 3 contains perhaps the most useful items in the collection: the
letters of Firmin A. Rozier of Ste. Genevieve concerning the affairs of the St. Francois and Iron Mountain Road Company,
1877-1883. Folder 4 consists mostly of
biographical items clipped from newspapers.
