These are Civil War letters of Walter V. Reeder, 36th Illinois Infantry, written from Rolla in Phelps County, Missouri, 2 October—6 November 1861.  The letters contain inquiries after family and friends, comments on the journey from Aurora, Illinois, and camp news from Rolla.

 

Walter V. Reeder was a resident of Aurora, Illinois.  He enlisted in Company C, 36th Illi­nois Infantry in 1861, and, with his regiment, was sent to Rolla, Missouri.  The regiment re­mained in Rolla until January 1862, when the Army of Southwest Missouri began the Pea Ridge campaign.
