Mabel Cogswell was the daughter of William B. and Mary Naomi Cogswell.  Her father was superintendent of the Mine La Motte mines, owned by Rowland Hazard, from 1874 into the 1880s.  The entries in Mabel’s diary begin on 1 January and continue through 25 July 1877.  They include notations on the high and low temperatures for the day, followed by brief notes on the activities of the day.  The entries also note the sickness of Mabel’s mother, Mary Naomi Cogswell, who died at Mine La Motte on 28 July 1877.  The diary ends three days prior to Mrs. Cogswell’s death.

The information folder includes biographical information on the Cogswells supplied by the donor of the diary.  After leaving Mine La Motte, William G. Cogswell became quite prominent as the founder of the Solvay Process Company, which later became the Allied Chemical Company.
