These are the papers of Odd Fellows Lodge No. 314 at Carterville in Jasper County, Missouri.  Included are business papers concerning the Carterville Lodge, and correspondence from individual members, the Jasper County IOOF Association, the Grand Lodge of Missouri, and conclaves at Kansas City and Butler, Missouri, and Pittsburg, Kansas.

Most of this collection of papers from Carterville Lodge No. 314 dates from the period of Harry M. Close’s tenure as lodge secretary, and is addressed to him.  The papers begin in 1919 as an attempt to reorganize and revitalize the lodge after financial difficulty nearly forced the lodge to surrender its charter for its inability to pay benefits to members and assessments by the Grand Lodge of Missouri.  Other correspondence includes general announcements from the Grand Lodge, the Jasper County IOOF Association, and organizers of grand conclaves for Odd Fellows in the Tri-State area.

A substantial portion of the collection consists of communications from members and beneficiaries regarding dues and the payment by the lodge of sick, survivor’s, and death benefits.  This correspondence, arranged alphabetically by the subject’s surname, also bears evidence of the lodge’s financial inability to meet its obligations.  Several Odd Fellows and the guardians of minor children and orphans persisted for several years in attempts to obtain benefit payments from Carterville.  Other communications from lodge members who had left the area concern routine dismissal and transfer certificates, and contain personal news and expressions of good will for the lodge.
