This is the scrapbook of Hurse Smith of Prospect, Alabama, a member of Company 1733 of the Civilian Conservation Corps.  Smith served in camps at Calico Rock, Arkansas, and Pond Fork, Missouri.  The scrapbook includes the names of officers and members of the company,  a brief record of service, and photographs of the camps and members of the company.

Hurse Smith enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corps at Caruthersville, Missouri, on 26 October 1933.  He was assigned to Company 1733, led by  Captain Theodore T. King.  Smith arrived at the company’s camp at Calico Rock, Arkansas, where he worked until the company was reassigned to a new camp at Pond Fork in Ozark County, Missouri, on 1 November 1934.  Smith’s duties with the company included the posts of orderly, mess steward, and cook.  Smith was discharged at Tacoma, Washington, in September 1937.

The scrapbook itself was printed specifically for Civilian Conservation Corps enrollees.  It bears the legend “Hysterical History,” and includes preprinted pages for individual service records and “Highlights” of camp life.  Hurse Smith filled most of his scrapbook with snapshots of fellow enrollees.  Also included are two snapshots of Hurse Smith during his service in the Merchant Marine in World War Two.
