These are
research materials on Cedar County, Missouri, compiled by Clayton Abbott, a local historian
and author from Stockton. The material, arranged topically, includes
newspaper clippings, transcripts of letters and documents, and drafts of
Abbott’s writings. The topics include
early settlement, churches, schools, the history of El Dorado Springs, stories
of the Gold Rush and the Civil War, post offices, and driving tours of Cedar County.
Some of the
material in the Abbott collection was used in his writings on local
history. Abbott authored or
collaborated in several works on Cedar
County. They included Historical Sketches of Cedar County (Stockton, Mo.: n.p., 1967);
and Missouri History in Cedar County,
by Clayton Abbott and Lewis B. Hoff (Greenfield, Mo.: Vedette Printing Co.,
1971). He contributed to Historical Tours of Cedar County, Missouri
(Stockton, Mo.: Cedar County Historical Society, 1977).
