This is the journal of a mercantile firm operated by J. S. Leavitt and John Kay at Houston in Texas County, Missouri.  The entries begin on 7 April 1875 with a memorandum of partnership, and continue through 14 August 1875 when the partnership was dissolved.

John S. Leavitt was a native of Ohio.  In 1875, he moved to Houston, Texas County, Missouri, where he formed a general mercantile business with John Kay.  The partnership lasted only four months before it was dissolved.  Leavitt and his family remained in the merchandising business.  The Leavitt Department Store in downtown Houston remained in business until 1995.  Nothing is known about John Kay, but he does not seem to have remained in Texas County.

The journal is a standard bookkeeping volume of the period.  It begins with a memorandum of agreement between J. S. Leavitt and John Kay showing the capital each had invested in the business.  Daily records of expenses and receipts follow, referenced to account books which are apparently no longer extant.  The final entry on 14 August 1875 notes that the business was being closed.  It is followed by statements of profits, losses, and accounts outstanding.  The final accounting showed a small profit.
