These are the clerk’s records of District No. 42, known as Brown Hill School, in Texas County, Missouri.  The records include minutes of annual, special, and board meetings, annual enumeration of students and lists of taxpayers, warrants issued, teachers’ contracts and monthly reports, and the district clerk’s reports to the county.

The Brown Hill School was located three miles east of Houston in Section 11, Township 30 North, Range 9 West, on land donated by J. S. Rice and Sarah Rice.  It served the farm community between Houston and Raymondville.  Very little is known of the school’s early history, but its first building was a typical one-room structure.  A new two-room building replaced in it 1936, and served until Brown Hill’s consolidation with Houston’s schools in 1969.  Extant records consist of three volumes of the district clerk’s records beginning in April 1905 and continuing through June 1938.  There are no records from 27 June 1922 through 15 August 1932.

Additional information on the Brown Hill School may be found in Volume I of Texas County Heritage (Houston, Mo.: Texas County Missouri Historical & Genealogical Society, 1989), pages 122-123.
