This is a ledger from a mercantile business operated by Robert L. Schenker at Vienna in Maries County, Missouri.  The ledger includes a list of promissory notes and their settlements, and an inventory of stock.

Robert L. Schenker was a native of Saxony, Germany, who came with his family direct to St. Louis about 1846.  He became a clerk for Barr, Duncan and Company in St. Louis, working at stores in that city, Peoria, Illinois, and Memphis, Tennessee.  In 1869, Schenker was sent by his employers to take over a store at Paydown in Maries County, Missouri.  Schenker recommended that the business be moved to the county seat at Vienna, which was done.  In September 1870, Schenker bought out the remaining stock and went into the mercantile business for himself.  Schenker died in Vienna in 1907.

Schenker’s ledger book begins with ten pages which list promissory notes accepted by Schenker.  There are also notations on the settlements of accounts, and on those defaulted and taken to court.  The remaining seventy pages of the volume are taken up with inventories of stock in the categories of boots and shoes, groceries, notions, dry goods, clothing, tinware, and hats and capes.  The inventory is undated.
